Podcast Stuff

  • 2018 Blanket MAL! There’s a thread up on Rav for photos and discussion, so please join us there as you work on blankets.
  • Quilt Along! There’s been some interest in having a quilt along, so I wanted to throw some more ideas out there to get people thinking about it.
    • Time Frame: March 2018 – September 2018 – 6 months
    • Quilt size: smallest side 3 ft/36”/92 cm
    • Quilt top pattern: Half Square Triangles – The entire quilt does not have to be half square triangles, but half square triangles should be a feature. I created a Pinterest board with some cool ideas.
    • Quilting: No rules about the actual quilting! Long arm, machine, by hand, or tie quilting is all welcome.
    • Link HERE to Jacqueline/Brooklyn Knitfolk’s quilt along tutorials
  • New Year Giveaway – Winner is… Post #19 MgoBlue – Paula from Indiana!

Life Stuff

  • New Bed! Full sized bed with a ridiculously fat mattress that’s hard as a rock and supremely comfortable. Ended up getting a great deal with a New Year’s sale and getting a friends and family discount because the sales guy was in the year below me in high school and we were both in band.

    • While the second Death Star is destroyed, Sidious escapes with Luke in custody, who is drugged into compliance and receptive to mind control, and Vader is captured by a faction of rebels, detoxed, prosthetics repaired/improved, healed as much as possible, and let free to make his own choices.
  • Fic Catch Up
    • I Guess I’ll Know When I Get There by Eisoj5
      • AU where the Rogue One crew is integrated into the original trilogy and Bodhi Rook and Luke Skywalker fall in love. • Witness Me series by SLWalker
      • AU where Darth Maul is captured instead of escaping and Obi-Wan and Maul’s tumultuous, strange understanding and developing romantic feelings. The latest pieces of this series are in the Clone Wars now with Maul being assigned the leader of elite commandos called the Blackbirds and it’s pretty fantastic.

We’re getting into some major plotting against Sidious now and the longer Anakin tries to hide who he is, the more people find out that he’s a time travelling former-Sith, which is super exciting.

Episode 50: Back At It

Filmed on Tuesday, December 19th

Podcast Stuff

  • Blanket MAL 2017 – Make along throughout 2017 for making blankets. Check out the thread on Ravelry for details!

Life Stuff

  • Office Move – OK with the new building now that I’ve been there a few times and I’ve found my spots to take breaks and eat lunch. Still a little stressed about parking because it’s monthly and the payment system from work was just set up, so I need to check with the parking folks next week when I need to pick up the January window card. Bleh.
  • Hands – Good news! My EMG came back negative, so there’s no nerve damage in my hands. I still have to rest them a lot, but I’ve been given the green light to do a little knitting. My hands do get tired easily, so I’m making myself listen to my body and when I need to put the knitting down so that I don’t hurt myself again.

FOs

  • St. Nicholas needle felt from Going Gnome kit
  • Alpaca Obsession – natural black – part of my alpaca shawl spin project
  • Simple shawl design for knitting machine – Asymmetrical shawl – Blue Ridge Yarns Kaleidescope in the Halloween colors and some Plymouth Galway Worsted in Black

WIPs

  • Mystery Fleece Spin – Hitchhiker wheel
  • Weaving Project – Finished strip 3 with hand dyed yarn by me and Once Upon a Corgi “Frosted Cranberries”, started strip 4 with Sincere Sheep Tenacious 100% SW Merino in the “Up and Down Button” colorway and some very old handspun by me

  • Granny Stripe Blanket (NEW) with fingering scraps held double with black – size G/4.25 mm

Other Stuff

Stuff I’m Watching:

  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi – no spoilers, I enjoyed myself in the theater, I think some things could be more polished and some of the writing is not my favourite, but it’s an okay movie. I do need to see it again in order to really dig into it. If you want to tell me what you thought of it, please comment below but no spoilers so that we don’t accidentally spoil anyone else. If you want a spoilery chat about it, send me a PM on Rav or Instagram and we’ll chat there.
  • Star Wars: Rebels season 4 – Finally remembered to buy the new season of Rebels and I’ve started in on that. I love that show.
  • The Midnight Quilt Show – a 15-ish minute quilting show on YouTube put on by Craftsy. It’s a funny show with some great simple-to-make-impressive-looking-quilts and Angela Walters is a fantastic host.

Stuff I’m Listening To:

  • Outbound Flight by Timothy Zahn narr by Jonathan Davis
  • Iron Fist (Netflix with the descriptive audio turned on)
  • The Defenders (Netflix with the description audio turned on)
  • The Drowning Girl by Caitlin R. Kiernan narr by Suzy Jackson

Stuff I’m Reading:

  • The Last of the Jedi: Dark Warning by Jude Watson
  • And the Next by ienablu – Jyn looks to the disappearing horizon and thinks, The Force is with me, I am one with the Force. The Force is with me, I am one with the Force. The Force is strong with me, I am –Jyn wakes up in her Wobani prison cell, panting and a scream dying in her throat.
  • Here Comes Another One by croatoanmary – Teenage Sirius Black in Cornwall in the UK texts the wrong number and connects with Canadian teen Remus Lupin. It’s super cute and hilarious.
  • Leo Inter Serpentes by Aeternum – Finally got around to catching up with Year 6 of this fic — it’s one of those Harry-gets-sorted-into-Slytherin fics where Snape ends up adopting him. It’s one of the first ones I’d read and kind of started me down the obsession with reading all those types of fics.

Episode 49: Holidays

Filmed on Saturday, December 2, 2017

Podcast Stuff

  • Blanket MAL 2017 – Make along throughout 2017 for making blankets. Check out the thread on Ravelry for details!

Life Stuff

  • Christmas Bazaars and Craft Fairs – Went to a ton of them a few weekends ago. There were so many going on the same day that my mom and I went to 4 craft shows and drove past a fifth in just my small town and a bit of the next town over. It was amazing. Most of them were church basements, but the coolest one is one we went to on a whim after I saw something come up online. In Bristol, CT, there’s a Carousel Museum that has space that can be rented out for events, so this Christmas Craft Fair rented out the museum for the weekend and it was super cool. There were tables right in among the exhibits on the first floor and there’s a big mostly empty room upstairs where a bunch of vendors were located. It was just such a surreal, whimsical thing.
  • Friendsgiving – Got together with some friends for a Thanksgiving dinner which was great.
  • Thanksgiving – Great, as always. We didn’t do an intentional theme this year, just tweaked a few of the vegetables’ recipes. It only ended up being four of us for dinner itself and then Gabby and her boyfriend and the dogs came over for pie.

  • Phone – No voicemail, all problems. Ended up having to reset my phone and I’m still working out the kinks on setting everything back up.
  • Hands – Improving! Less twinging with hand sewing type things and I can spin again!
  • Work – We’re coming up on the office move, which is super stressful. Trying to get my physical environment sorted and ready to move and trying to arrange parking. Parking is 95% sorted, but I won’t feel relaxed about it until I actually have the parking pass in my hands.
  • New England Fiber Fest – I attended NEFF on Sunday, Nov 5th. I love this fiber festival – it’s probably my favourite of the ones that we attend. It’s a great selection of things and it’s super chill.

    • A Hundred Ravens – Aesir base (sport 100% merino) “I Am Fire I Am Death”
    • Going Gnome – St. Nicholas kit
    • Lanart – Gallant Goat

Other Stuff

Stuff I’m Listening To:

  • The Last Command (The Thrawn Trilogy Bk3) by Timothy Zahn narr by Marc Thompson
  • The Millenium Falcon by James Luceno narr by Marc Thompson

Stuff I’m Reading:

  • By Baker Street Station, I Sat Down and Wept by Deco
    • Petunia Dursley has trouble: she’s lost her family, she’s going crazy, she can do magic (but not always), her suitors are a mixed bag (operative word) & people keep trying to take her children away from her. They should be very afraid. (Not only a) Double Severitus. WARNING: Not what you expected.
    • I honestly haven’t run into very many Petunia-centric fanfics and this one is a really good one. She’s still very Petunia – nosy, opinionated, and shrewd – but this is a Petunia that realized very early on in her marriage that she was not happy, Vernon is a terrible person, and Harry Potter is the only person left alive from her extended family. This Petunia was admittedly extremely jealous of her sister and the world she got to be a part of, but even as she hates Lily, she still loved her.
    • This Petunia is an incredibly strong character and is admirably headstrong and stubborn and sensible through an incredible series of strange happenings and dealing with ridiculous people.
    • Also, sensible, stubborn Petunia Dursley dealing with the wizarding world directly is a gem. Seriously. Her common sense and her personal understanding of human nature is brilliant when up against such figures as Albus Dumbledore, Dobby the House Elf, and Sirius Black.

Episode 45: Plans and Ramblings

Filming on 8/13/17

Podcast Stuff

  • Blanket MAL 2017 – Started Jan 1st! There is a chatter/encouragement thread up in the Ravelry group and I’m planning on pulling prizes once a quarter for this MAL. #2017BlanketMAL
  • #sithandspin – June 1st to August 31st! Spin on whatever as you turn to the Dark Side with your favourite Star Wars media.
  • Giveaway! Go over to the Ravelry thread and answer the prompt: What yarny adventures or projects are you looking forward to in the coming season?

Life Stuff

  • Hands – They are improving. Work has been exacerbating the issue with lots of repetitive hand movements this week, which has been annoying, but I’m trying to take care of them and working on my patience.
  • Puppy Time – My parents were on vacation this past week, so my brothers and I were on our own. This meant lots of puppy time for me. Penny has particular people that she sticks to. Mom is Number One and she doesn’t like to leave Mom alone when she’s home, but Dad and I are pretty closely tied for Number Two, depending on the day and if Dad is cooking that day. I mean, she loves my brothers, but she’s not too fussed when they come and go.

  • McCall’s M6044 Mens shirt pattern
  • 3 yards grey cotton
  • 3 yards plaid cotton
  • Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Sport in Hollyberry and Dove Heather- Christmas Sweater~~ Star Wars Sweater by Natalie Meredith
  • Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Sport in Aurora Heather and Dove Heather – Soooo deadcatwithaflamethrower (who is a fanfic author and an original work published author who I follow) has been dragging me kicking and screaming back into the mire of HP fandom a bit and I’ve been feeling some Slytherin pride while reading her (epic) fics Swung by Serafim and Of a Linear Circle. I had made a Slytherin scarf when I first started knitting with some Red Heart Super Saver and I think Caron Simply Soft, but this was really before I knew anything about anything. There aren’t even any ends woven in on this thing, just knots where the colors change and I knit it in a tube so I didn’t have to deal with the ends. It’s about time to remake this project so that I have some actually wearable Slytherin stuff come winter.
  • Once Upon a Corgi – Poe Club – Oliver Base (SW Merino single) – Tomorrow I Shall Be Fetterless
  • HopeSick.Com enamel pins – McDonald’s Nugget Buddies Halloween and Horror from the Pagemaster

Other Stuff

Stuff I’m Listening To:

  • Spines
    • Two months ago, Wren woke up covered in blood, suffering from memory loss, and surrounded by the remnants of some strange cult ritual. SPINES is the story of her search for answers, and the deadly, powerful people she encounters along the way.

Stuff I’m Watching:

  • Game of Thrones
  • Sense8 Season 2

Stuff I’m Reading:

  • Heir to the Empire ( The Thrawn Trilogy Bk 1) by Timothy Zahn (audio) narr by Marc Thompson
  • Dark Force Rising (The Thrawn Trilogy Bk2) by Timothy Zahn (audio) narr by Marc Thompson
  • The Edgar Allan Poe Audio Collection (audio) narr by Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone

Fanfic Recommendation

  • Harry Potter and the Problem of Potions by Wyste
  • Once upon a time, Harry Potter hid for two hours from Dudley in a chemistry classroom, while a nice graduate student explained about the scientific method and interesting facts about acids. A pebble thrown into the water causes ripples.Contains, in no particular order: magic candymaking, Harry falling in love with a house, evil kitten Draco Malfoy, and Hermione attempting to apply logic to the wizarding world.

Episode 44: One Finished Object

Filmed on Sunday, July 30th 2017

Podcast Stuff

  • Blanket MAL 2017 – Started Jan 1st! There is a chatter/encouragement thread up in the Ravelry group and I’m planning on pulling prizes once a quarter for this MAL. #2017BlanketMAL
  • #sithandspin – June 1st to August 31st! Spin on whatever as you turn to the Dark Side with your favourite Star Wars media.

Life Stuff

  • Heat Wave and Cool Down – It’s been so hooooottttttttt. D: But then it rained for a few days and went from 90+ degrees F (32.2 C) to about 60 degrees F (16.5), which was a m a z i n g
  • Hands – Hurt my hands and ended up having to rest them. Still not 100% – they get sore and tired easily still. Gotta work on my patience because I think I’m pushing too hard on good days. I’ve been trying to remember to stretch my hands and my hands have been getting their own warm baths lately, which I’m finding to be incredibly helpful.
  • Craft Party – A couple of my friends had a birthday recently and they had a craft party where they brought a bunch of beading stuff and craft kits to just make whatever while we sat around talking and watching Pride and Prejudice. It was super chill and really nice to just hang out and do crafts with friends. I ended up making some stitch markers, which are a lot nicer than any other stitch markers I’ve made because Erin has much nicer materials for beadwork than I do. These will go on my sweater project once I’m done filming the podcast.
    • (And Erin has so many nice materials because she sells jewlery in her Etsy shop GEEKandFANCY )
  • Printer Furniture – Ended up rearranging some furniture in my bedroom again, which is what happens when I feel like I don’t have control, which is flaring up due to not being able to knit/crochet/spin as much as I normally can. I finally tossed this old nightstand that my printer was on – the particle board started splitting about 15 years ago and I just kept patching it up with electrical tape. I have these two little 2-cube shelves that I stole from a younger brother when he finished college, so I took my little packing station and the other one and put them together for a little printer shelf thing.

Knitting Stuff

WIPs

  • Jyn Erso socks – Must Stash Yarns “Rogue One” Self-Striping – US 0/2.0 mm needles
  • Afterthought Everything Socks – Legacy Fiber Artz Advent Calendar colorway – US 0/2.0 mm needles
  • Akiko by Regina Moessmer – Lion Brand Scarfie (78/22 Acrylic/Wool) in 201 Cream Black – US 7/4.5 mm and US 8/5.0 mm needles

Fiber Stuff

  • Dye Day with Mom – Mom bought a dye kit from The Woolery because she’s getting into yarn dyeing (I will let you know when she starts her Etsy shop) and she and I played with some over-dyeing. She had a skein that she had dyed that wasn’t what she was looking for and I have a few skeins left from the Great Dye Experiment of August 2015 that no longer work for me and the skein of cormo that I bought to dye specifically.
    • Red overdye skein
    • Blue overdye skein
    • Green overdye skein
    • Cormo – yellow/orange/red dye
  • Weaving – I warped my 10” Cricket rigid heddle loom for double width fabric. It’s definitely interesting and I’ve got the rhythm for it down now, but it’s going to take a long time to finish.
  • Hedgehog Fibers Silk Hankies – drop spindling
  • Lock spinning with my collection of cotswald, mohair, and wendsleydale locks

Sewing Stuff

  • Halloween Quilt update – Pioneer Blankets pattern from The Weekend Quilter !!

New Stuff

  • Village Wool haul
    • Classic Elite Yarns Mohawk Wool in Fog – 2 skeins to put towards a sweater with the other 4 skeins of Black that I have
    • Classic Elite Yarns Mountaintop Blackthorn – 13 skeins – Bulky weight yarn, but I have to use smaller needles than what patterns usually call for anyway, so I might swatch for a worsted weight sweater pattern and just adjust the sizing
  • Once Upon a Corgi – ASoUE club – Audrey base 80/20 SW BFL/nylon – Snow Scout
  • Once Upon a Corgi – Edgar Allen Poe club – I did purchase this club, so I’m forewarning you that I will be receiving those club colorways. And, since Gabby is my sister, I may be receiving these before they get mailed out, so I may be showing them on the podcast before you get them if you’ve also purchased the club. I didn’t hear anything from anyone about me showing the ASoUE club colorways, but ASoUE is more niche than the late great Edgar Allen Poe. Just wanted you to be aware.

Life Stuff

  • Hands – Hurt my hands and ended up having to rest them. Still not 100% – they get sore and tired easily still, so the crafting in this episode is a little bit more focused on other crafting areas than usual
  • Gabby Move! – Helped my sister Gabby/@onceuponacorgi move last weekend, which was good. Spent the most time just getting stuff out of her apartment because of those stairs. The new place was really easy to move into and it’s a great apartment.
  • Craft Room – Doing a smidge of reorganizing because that’s how my brain copes with life and it’s about time to make adjustments since I’ve been in the space and actively using it for a while now. Stole a kitchen island cart thing from Gabby who won’t be using it and it ended up at our house, so it’s my drum carding station now.

Knitting Stuff

Frogged

Filming on Friday, June 2nd 2017

Podcast Stuff

  • Blanket MAL 2017 – Started Jan 1st! There is a chatter/encouragement thread up in the Ravelry group and I’m planning on pulling prizes once a quarter for this MAL. #2017BlanketMAL
  • #sithandspin – Coming soon! June 1st to August 31st! Spin on whatever as you turn to the Dark Side with your favourite Star Wars media.

        • Season 3: Episodes 15-17 “The Mortis Trilogy” for all the wacky space fantasy you could possibly want
        • Season 4: Episodes 19-22 “Nightsister/Savage/Maul Saga” for Dark Side Witches and the BEST Sith family drama in the universe
        • Season 5: Episodes 14-16 “Maul Mandalorian Saga” for more Maul drama and maximum Obi-Wan Kenobi pain and good hair
        • Season 4: Episodes 7-10 “Umbara Arc” for maximum clone feelings and excellently handled Dark Side corruption of an fascinating and horrible character
      • Rebels – Not currently streaming on any services, but they are available for digital purchase – Scrappy on-the-run Jedi! Sith Inquisitors! Darth Vader’s overly dramatic cape!
      • Books (available as physical and audio – some as digital download as well)
        • Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover
          • Novelization of Episode III – lots of expansion and explanation that the movie doesn’t or can’t provide
        • Maul: Lockdown by Joe Schreiber
          • Darth Maul punching people in space prison – featuring Dark Side Death gangs and Jabba the Hutt’s fancy hologram sled pulled by krayt dragons
        • The Darth Bane Trilogy by Drew Karpyshyn (starts with Path of Destruction)
          • The Old Old Republic – easy entry point to the Extended Universe because all you need to know is that about 1000 years before Episode 1, there was a Republic with Jedi and a Sith Empire and they hated each other
        • Star Wars: Clone Wars: Gambit: Stealth (and its sequel Siege)
          • This book is one part Clone Wars battle, one part tense polyamorous dinner date between Anakin Skywalker, Padme Amidala, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Bail Organa where Anakin is jealous of Bail getting all of Obi-Wan and Padme’s affections and wants to know why no one is touching his arm and smiling charmingly, and one part Obi-Wan and Anakin keep having Feelings that they can’t deal with while tucked into air ducts and under tables.
          • FYI, the sequel features more Feelings that Anakin cannot deal with, Taria Damsin’s magical unicorn hair, and Obi-Wan convincing himself not to adopt a scrappy little girl

Knitting Stuff

FOs

WIPs

  • Find Your Fade by Andrea Mowry – US 3/ 3.25 mm – Once Upon a Corgi “But It Could Kill You,” “His Name is Shirley,” and “Coconut Cream Cake,” Legacy Fiber Artz “Sweater Weather”, Voolenvine Yarns “Mooncusser”
  • Boba Fett socks – Must Stash Yarns “Boba Fett” Self-Striping – US 0/2.0 mm needles
  • Started swatching for a shawl design, but I’m tweaking things and playing around. I’ll show it once I have a feasible sample knit up. And if anyone out there who designs regularly has some advice about test knitting protocol and stuff, shoot me a Rav message or an email at freakishlemonpodcast@gmail.com. I’m aiming to actually sell this pattern (cheapy cheap, but money will exchange for it) and I don’t know what I’m doing.

Crochet Stuff

FOs

WIPs

  • HDC Scrap Blanket – worsted weight scrap yarns – US H/5.0 mm hook
  • Scrap Granny Squares – worsted weight scrap yarns – US H/5.0 mm hook

Fiber Stuff

  • Mystery Fleece Prep – picking out the good locks from the matted/short cuts out of what was left of the mystery fleece, flicking them open, and carding them.
    • Tossed somewhere between one-third and one-half of the fleece (into the woods for the animals to use, not the garbage)
    • Not great spinning fleeces, but they were cheap and I found them via a post from a local farmer on Craigslist – the farmer told me that the sheep not raised for spinning fiber as a goal, she sheared them herself and admitted to needing more practice in shearing without second cuts, and they were stored in feed bags in a barn loft (I grabbed a fresh one at the time)
    • Practice fleeces, so I’m sure I matted up some locks that would have been fine if I’d really known what I was doing.
    • ALL the mystery fleece that I’m using has now been prepped and carded into batts, ready for spinning
  • Chain-ply a left over single from the first half of the mystery fleece
  • Brown cormo sweater spin with cormo from Marsh Mallo Farms and Clabber Glynn Farm
  • Chain-ply “Columbia” batt from Classy Squid Fiber Co

Fanfic Recommendation

  • Dudley Dursley’s Magical Children!
  • New Leaf to Turn by slavetothepen (therunawaypen)
    • Dudley Dursley lived a very normal life. But when an all too familiar letter makes an appearance on his son’s 11th birthday, Dudley must seek the guidance of a cousin he hasn’t seen in 19 years.
  • Dudley Dursley’s Most Unexpectedly Fortunate Flower by aTasteofCaramell
    • Dudley Dursley is leading a perfectly normal life, his contact with his odd cousin limited to Christmas cards and peculiar memories.
Until his daughter sneezes and sets the curtains on fire.

Life Stuff

  • Craft Room – Welcome to the new carpet!!
  • New phone – Filming with the new phone, so the image and sound might be a little different than usual.
  • Weather – Ugh hot and also ticks, which are ridiculous right now. We’re taking all precautions – Pen is on flea/tick meds and a natural fragrant oil spray for dogs, and we’ve got a fresh can of Off! Deep Woods for the humans – but man, you know the tick situation is bad when you come in from taking the dog out and she flops over to have you check her belly and chest for ticks. This dog has had so many hitching rides in her fur that she checks her feet and her back for them herself.

  • Lif-e.Af/ter
    • When you die in the digital age, pieces of you live on forever. In your emails, your social media posts and uploads, in the texts and videos you’ve messaged, and for some – even in their secret online lives few even know about. But what if that digital existence took on a life of its own? Ross, a low level FBI employee, faces that very question as he starts spending his days online talking to his wife Charlie, who died
8 months ago…But what feels like an unbelievable gift starts to bring up some very real moral and ethical predicaments, as Ross discovers LifeAfter,
the program that brought his wife – and countless others back to life online. But what is “life” if you can be preserved digitally? And if you
live online, where do you spend eternity?
  • Thrilling Adventure Hour – “Beyond Belief”
    • A new time podcast in the style of old time radio!
    • The episodes were live events in a sort of radio variety hour and each segment was split out into a podcast episode. There’s a bunch of different shows on here, but the one that really appealed to me is “Beyond Belief” which is a series about Frank and Sadie Doyle who are high-society drunks that go about solving paranormal problems. It’s full of hilarious word play and ghost jokes.
  • Limetown
    • Ten years ago, over three hundred men, women and children disappeared from a small town in Tennessee, never to be heard from again. In this seven-part podcast, American Public Radio host Lia Haddock asks the question once more, “What happened to the people of Limetown?”
  • Wooden Overcoats
    • RUDYARD FUNN RUNS A FUNERAL HOME ON THE ISLAND OF PIFFLING.It used to be the only one. It isn’t anymore. On the overlooked Channel Island of Piffling, obstinate undertaker Rudyard Funn runs his family’s failing funeral parlour. But when new and sexy undertaker Eric Chapman sets up shop across the square and becomes an immediate sensation, Rudyard realises he’ll have to take drastic steps to stay in business.

With his frustrated sister Antigone, dogsbody Georgie, and a mouse called Madeleine, will Rudyard ever defeat his charming rival?

Fanfic Recommendation

  • Stand the hazard of the die by KeelieThompson1
    • A plot from the future to save the past effectively ends Anakin Skywalker’s career as a Jedi knight.
    • Old Ben Kenobi sends seven-year-old Luke Skywalker back in time with a message for this younger self – “Do not let it happen again. The boy will save Anakin, but I cannot predict how that will change things. Vader died the moment he had to choose between the boy and his power. Luke is the key and he is all you will need to save us.”
